Wi-Fi drops, devices fall off, or roaming is unstable

Use this flow when wireless clients disconnect, lose internet access, or fail to roam reliably. It separates client/coverage/RF problems from gateway, WAN, VLAN, and firewall problems.

Preserve the baseline: do not factory-reset equipment, change security/VLAN policy, share Wi-Fi/admin credentials, or change multiple RF settings at once.

What this flow is for

Wireless clients disconnect, lose internet, or roam unreliably. The first split is one client/room/AP versus the whole network, and Wi-Fi association versus gateway/WAN reachability.

First safe checks

  • Record client, SSID/band, location/AP, timestamps, and exact symptom.
  • Compare wired and wireless devices during the same event.
  • Test gateway reachability separately from a public IP or website.
  • Review redacted signal/RSSI, AP balance, channel congestion, airtime, roaming, and event data.
  • Capture a timeline before changing channels, power, roaming, firmware, or placement.

Scope

One client, one room/AP, one band, or every wireless client.

Reachability

Gateway versus public reachability and whether wired devices stayed stable.

RF state

Redacted RSSI/signal, channel, airtime, roaming, AP events, and recent changes.

Most likely problem buckets

Signal or coverage

Weak/fluctuating signal, AP balance, or a coverage hole affects the client.

Interference or airtime

Channel congestion, interference, or high airtime use causes instability.

Roaming or band

A sticky client, roaming threshold, or band compatibility problem creates drops.

Gateway or policy

WAN, DHCP, VLAN, firewall, or cabling trouble appears as wireless trouble.

Take one step at a time

ACT-NET-010

Record client, SSID/band, location/AP, timestamps, and association versus internet behavior.

ACT-NET-011

Compare wired/wireless stability and gateway/public reachability during the same event.

ACT-NET-012

Review signal, AP balance, channels, airtime, roaming, and events before changing settings.

ACT-NET-013

Make one reversible documented change or hand off RF, VLAN/firewall, cabling, or roaming work.

Best follow-up ask

Does the drop affect one device, one room/AP, one band, or every wireless client?

When to stop and hand off

Escalate RF redesign, VLAN/firewall/cabling, managed WLAN changes, or any reset without a preserved configuration baseline.

Reviewed against official wireless guidance

This vendor-neutral flow uses official Ubiquiti and Cisco guidance for signal/RSSI, interference, airtime, client/AP balance, and roaming evidence. Thresholds and controls remain platform-specific.

Map the network

Record the router, access points, affected room, client, and relationship evidence privately.
