PC turns on but no display

Use this flow when the PC powers on, but nothing useful appears on the monitor. The goal is to separate monitor and cable mistakes from GPU, RAM, or no-POST problems before you start swapping parts.

Safety first: stop if the GPU slot, power connector, or motherboard shows visible burn or damage.

What this flow is for

The PC appears to power on, but no useful display output reaches the monitor. That still leaves the display path, monitor input, RAM, GPU, and no-POST behavior in play.

First safe checks

  • Confirm the monitor is on the correct input.
  • If a discrete GPU is installed, connect the display cable to the GPU, not the motherboard.
  • Try a known-good cable and another monitor input if available.
  • Test one RAM stick in the recommended slot.
  • Check for board debug LEDs or POST codes.

Ask for the best first proof

Rear I/O photo

Capture where the display cable is connected and which ports are in use.

Debug behavior

Record any debug LED or POST code pattern that appears during startup.

RAM test result

Note whether one RAM stick in the recommended slot changes the outcome.

Most likely problem buckets

Display-path mistake

The monitor input is wrong or the cable is on the wrong output.

GPU or PCIe power issue

The graphics card is not fully seated or the PCIe power path is incomplete.

RAM or no-POST issue

The system powers on, but memory or POST behavior prevents usable video output.

Platform graphics mismatch

The expected video path does not match the installed GPU or CPU graphics support.

Take one step at a time

ACT-PC-005

Confirm the monitor input and the correct cable path before deeper hardware changes.

ACT-PC-006

Test one RAM stick in the recommended slot and note any debug LED change.

ACT-PC-007

Reseat the GPU and PCIe power leads, then test onboard graphics only if supported.

Best follow-up ask

Where is the display cable connected right now, and do you see any debug LEDs or POST codes?

When to stop and hand off

Escalate when cable, RAM, and GPU checks fail and the system still never produces video output.

Switch branches if the symptom changes

If the system moves from no display into Windows trouble or obvious no-POST behavior, move into the closest recovery page instead of repeating the same monitor checks.
