Router
The router decides how local devices reach each other and the internet. It is the traffic manager for the network.
Access point
The access point extends or supplies Wi-Fi coverage. It improves the wireless path but does not replace upstream routing problems.
Match the symptom to the layer
- If every device loses internet, start with the modem and WAN path first.
- If one part of the building has weak service, focus on access-point placement and coverage.
- If devices cannot reach printers, cameras, or local apps, the router and network layout matter more.
- If the setup feels confusing, draw the path before changing settings blindly.
